REDUCTION IN FRESH MEAT QUOTAS

CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 2. From Mo nday" Jast the Govermnem has redueed the South Island butehers quotas of fresh meat by 10 per cent., a reduction whfeh may be made up b} using frozen meat. This advice has been* received by the Canterbury Master Butchers' Association which has circularised its niembers as follows: ri'In an endea-vdui'v to reduce the demand for meat and thus the price 6i' livestock, arrangements have been made by the New Zealand Alaster Butcher's Federation for a eompulsory reduction of 10 per cent. to. be made in the quotas of fresh meat throughout tho South Island. This reduction, which may be made up with frozen meat, will remain in I'orce until further notiee. " The decision is probablv the resuL of discussions between a deputation from the New Zealand Alastei Butchers' Federation and the Minis ter of Finance, Air. Nash. Last week a deputation waited on the Alinistei to discuss several matters of im portance to the industry such as high market prices, a new price order and meat ratiomng. A reduction in the quota of fresh meat was not a full answer to tho butchers' problems, said the presiden of the Canterbury Alaster Butchers5 Association, Mr. F. R. Blancliard. Quality butchers would be loath to handle frozen meat to mahe up their quota, h.e said, as it was not in grea. demand.
