POWER CONSUMPTION SOARS

EFFECT OF COLD WEATHER The sudden cold snap yesterday caused a phenomenally heavy demand for electricity throughout the Horowhenua district and the day's consumption was the heavie'st since v recordings were com-, menced sevefal years ago. The managing -secretary Of the Horowhenua Electric Power Board, Mr. R. A. .Frederikson, said this morning that 93,000 units were used yesterday and this figure was 18,000 units above the district's quota. In consequence it had been necessary to impose heavier ration-. ing of power for waterheaters. Mr. Frederikson made an appeal to consumers to make a .voiufitary reduction in the amount of power they used, otherwise if the consumption continued at anything like yesterday's level the board would have no option but t.o extend rationing further than the curtailment made on waterheaters .
