PREPARING FOR SOFTBALL

AJAX CLTJB HOLDS ANNUAL . MEETING Pleasure at the fact that softball players now had a ground of their Dwn was expressed by the . presilent of the Ajax Club, Mr. A. Truman, at the eighth annual. meeting Last night. They had had an uphill fight for grounds for the past seven years, and these eflorcs had resulted in a fDur and a half acre section in Cambridge Street being made available by the Levin Borough Council. This area was now being prepared and top dressed for the coming season. The club had ended last season with a credit balance of £1 11? lld. There was also a- sum of £3 12s which was owing in subscriptions, but had not been collected prior to the balance sheet being completed. Therefore, the club was in a slightly better position financially than the previous year. Following discussion on the members' subscriptions, it was decided that they remaih at the same figure as last year, namely seniors 12s 6d, women 7s od, juniors 7s 6d and non-playing members 3s. It was decided that practice nights meantime -be on Wednesdays between 5.15 and 6 p.m. Practices would commence on September 17. The president mentioned that two return matches with Wanganui were owing at the end _ of last season, and on the suggestion of Mr. J. Greatbach it was agreecj that arrangements be made for a visit to Wanganui before the season ofhcially opened. Prior to the election of officers the president, Mr. Truman, indicated that he would prefer not to seek re-election this year. He said he had agreed to retain the position during the war in order to keep the club going, but now that the service members of the club had returned he would like to see some of the young members taking" over the responsibility. in asking Air. Truman to re-consider his decision, Mr. D. Collier said ,that Mr. Truman had the confidence of the club and had been a great infiuence. He doubted if they could find anyone who could fill his place. Replying, Mr. Truman said that he felt he could not now put so much time into the task as was necessary for the club's well behig, and he would like to see oiher nominations. As no further nominations were forthcoming, he agreed to accept the position temporarily, but asked that eiiorts be made to replace him during the season. His retirement from the presidency of the club did not mean, however, that he would cease to.take an active interest in its welfare. He was keen to see it improve and expand, but considered that younger leadership was now necessary. The election .of officers resulted as follows: — Patron: Mr. F. D. Chainey_; president: Mr. A. Truman; vice-presidents: Messrs. H. Huht," P. Waltbn "and ' D.' Collier; secretary: Mr. W. Rose; management committee: Messrs. J. Greatbach, C. Thompson, J. Brown, W. La Roche and Misses B. Eagle and J. Truman; club captain: Mr. D. Collier; gear custodians: Mr. C. Thompson and Miss J. Truman. Appreciation of the work of th*s Secretary, Mr. W. Rose, was expressed by Mr. Truman. A donation of £1 ls from Mr. H. Hmit was also gratefully acknowledged.
