SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS

NEW PLYMOUTH, Sept. 1. Completing two splendid runs without mishap, Miss H. D. Alanson, . Ruapehu Ski Club, won the women 's slalom at the' New Zealand amateur ski championships which opened on the Manga> nui slciing grounds on Mt. Egmont to? day. Bad weather prevented the running of any of the other events. Miss Alanson was the previous holder of the title. Mrs. G. GilKinson, Otago Ski Olub, winner of the 1946 "women "s downliill title, was second. The snow conditions were exceilent for the event but by the time the lirst competitor started' a liigh wind was blowing. The weather beeame bitteriy cold and competitdrs caught by gusts of wind were liable to be put off balance at critical moments. The course was difficult and was said to be up to the standard of any set for previous championships. There was, however, considerable critieism that the flags were not placed far enough apart. Few of the coinpetitors completed the course without falling. It was intended to hold the meu's loug distance raee at the completiou of the women 's slaloin but the weather beeame worse and. rain set in. The lirst six place-getters in' the women 's slalom were: — Miss H. D. Alanson, Ruapeliu Ski Club, 2min 34sec, 1; Mrs. G. Gillcinson, Otago Ski Glub, 2min 56sec, 2; Miss P. Kilson, Christchurch Ski Glub, 3min 36see, 3; Miss II. A. P. Wigley, Tasman Ski Glub, 3min 40 l-5sec, 4; Mrs. P. McNab, Nelson Ski Glub, 3mm 55 3-5sec, 5; Miss P. MeMalion, Ruapehu Ski Glub, 4min 15sec, 6. * Queenstown was suggested as the venue of the 1948 championships at a meeting of delegates at Stratford. Delegates elected to the Ski Council were Messrs J. B. Young (Wellington), A. Wigley (Timaru), " \V. B. Meyhre (Christchurch), F. H. Drewitt ('Wellington), Dr. J. B. Bibey (Wellington). Two furtlier delegates, Messrs P. W. Young (Timaru) aud S. Syme (Hawera), are appointed by tlie Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand.
