ATHLETIC WIN BRIGHT GAME

Play was bright and open. in the game beiween Athletic and Shanr non at Levin, the former winning by 16 points to.3. Towards the end of the game both teams were showIng signs of the effort they were putting into the match. Some very bright back play was seen in both teams.. with Athletic showing to advantage.

The first score came when, from a sorum, G. Soiascia (Athletic) collected the b all and sent it along the back line to R. Stevens, who made a dash and scored about five yards from the side line. Galloway converted. Athletic 5, Shannon 0. Following this came a scrambie In which some good handling by the Athletic rearguard did not bring the results it deserved, Then from a rearguard movement in the Shannon twenty-five the ball was passed to Lancaster, who fumbled. W. Galloway, however, was ready and he • gathered the ball in and fell'ovet the line. He failed to get his extras, Athletic 8, Shannon 0. The first excitement in the second half came when Athletic were penalised for holding the ball and F. Nepia, Shannon's first fiveeighths, kicked a good penalty to make the score Athletic 8, Shannon 3. Athletic forced Shannon up the field and held them on their own ground for some time. Then Shannon, taking advantage of a fumble by Galloway, forced down the field, only to find that Galloway had •laken a mark after putting himself on side. He made a long curving kick to gain a good thirty yards oi ground. Following a strong forward movement J. Grainger found himself with a clear run of 35 yards and sprlnted down the field to score beneath the posts. Galloway converted. Athletic 13, Shannon 3. As a fitting finish to a good game J. Lomas gathered the bail in as it bounced from a short kick, hesitated almost on top of the line, and ihen ran over to score. Galloway failed to convert. Athletic 16 Shannon 3.
