CAR OWNERS RUSH PETROL
AUCKLAND, July 31. Persistent runiours in Auckland that ! petrol rationiiig would be introduced I tomorrow, were officially denied in Wellington tonight. The rumours reached a peak this evening when hundreds of startled motorists queued up to obtain reserve supplies at service stations in all parts of the eity and suburbs. Most of the bowser proprietors di.sbelieved the story in spite of its wide currency and met the requirements of all comers with an air of makI ing hay while the sun shone. A large' citv garage which provides a 24-hour service reported shortly after 8 o'clock that there had been a long queue of j vehicles stretching from the pumps for several hours. As he would be open after midnight, the attendant said he felt sure he would have been the first t:o know if rationing was to have como into foree on August 1. He said he was supplying everyone "even if they want 1000 gallons and have a good excuse."
