HORSES FOR MEAT

(Speeial Correspondent.)

Received Thursday, 7 p.m. LONDON, july 24. Reports that the slaughter of horse meat is on tlie increase ih Britain, is worrying the Shire Horse Society and it is by no means satisfted with thf "light-hearted" reply by the Ministei oi ±"ood wnen a protest was maae that horses will die out if killings continue at the present rate. The society 's council is holding a special meeting tG discuss the position. It has aiready pointed ont that in 1946 only 16,000, or less than one-third of the required number of foals, were born and ai ieast 15 per cent. of them killed for food. The Ministry of Food thinks it unlikely that valuable horses would be killed for food and does not treat the matter seriously.
