Forests Being Spoiled For jirewood
LONDON, July 24. the high' priees at present being paid for firewood — £5 to £7 a ton ip the vicinity of London — have en eOurag'ed speculatbrs to biiy heavil} wciod'ed properties fdr the sole purposi of felling the trees and cutting them for fuel. At present prices big profits cdii be m'ade by this means and the ex tent of the purchases is causing mis givings about the spoilation of Englisl. woodlands. Firewood speculators art not interested in replacing and fre quently leave masses of braiiehes ani. foliage littering the sites. The News Chronicle, which describe this as 4 'the Jatest racket", calls fo. legislative action to prevent furthe. dainage to the timber resources an beauty spots and says if this is no taken it will soon be impossible to sei the trees for firewood in England '> green and pleasant land.
