WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
There was a good attendance of members at, the Poroutawhao Women's Institute's July meeting, While visitors were present from Lfndsay- W.I., Wellington. Mrs. Carle presided and before the business commenced mentioned the loss the institute had" sustained in the passing recently of Mrs. C. H. Arcus, who was one of its oldest and most valued members and a past president. Members stood in Silence as a mark of respect to her memory. The gudst speaker for the afternoon was Mrs. N. M. Thomson, who gave an interesting account of her travels through Italy. Mrs. Carle thanked the speaker and presented he'r with a beautiful spray, the Work of Mrs. Spiers. An attractive gift box of fruit was sent to Mrs. Rowe, who is a patient in Hill S reet Hospital, Wellington. Competitions were won by Mesdames Winiata and Williams. The monthly competitions resulted as
follows: Best bloom, Mrs. Spiers; best shrub, Mesdames Spiers and Hanham; cake, Mesdames Hanham and Penny (equal). Hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs. Scott and Miss Carle. The singing of the National Anthem brought a pleasant afternoon to a close.
