fine ski films screened The monthly meeting of the Levin-Waiopehu Trampmg Club t was held on Tuesday evening." There was an attendance of some 30 members-' and the president, Mr. N. M. Thomson, oceupied the chair. Two new membbrs were nominated and elected. The club's membership now numbers 105. • Further arrangements were made for the club's ski-ing trip to Rangi- • wahia on the weekend of August 16-17. It was decided to leave the ous stop at 6 a.m. on August- 16, and that those making the trip pay bhe balance of the cost to the secretary (Miss T. Nockels) by the end of the -present week. Enquiries are to be made regarding the availability of accommodation at Mount Egmont for a weekend during September or October. An out-ing was fixed for August /. 10- to the Arapaepae Hills and along£ . to Shannon Heights Road. The party will depart at 9 a.m. The club captain, Mr. K. Mackie, gave the meeting an account of • '• the last monthly ou.ing to Tokomaru Waterfall, which had been visited by 23 members. - A committee consisting of Miss T. Nockels and Messrs. A. -L. Edwards ' and K. Mackie was set up to arrange transport for club outings. In this connection the chairman stressed the need .'for members to notify the secretary by Wednesday of the week preceding a trip if they intended going so that transport could be arranged accordingly. It was resolved that" a letter be sent to the Levin Film Society expressing thanks for the use of its projector for the two film evenings the club had held. Misses A. HeSp and R. Williams were elected to the social committee to replace Misses G. France and J. Lacey, both of whom had left Levin. The business dispossd » of, two highly interesting ski-ing films were screened. The first was a deiailed recording of the 1938 international ski championships and the audience was given an outstanding' exhibition by the champions of all the European countries, with many thrilling runs and jumps. The second film, entitled "A Nation of Skiers," centred round Switzerland and the intensive in'struction, which is given to the people from toddlers to adults. The opening shots were of classes indoors, where the theory and science of the sport was being explained. This is followed by practical instruction in the various i movements, carried out with skis jon the snow but in the stationary position. Once proficient in this j the pupils under,take runs on gentle slopes, learning the art thoroughly before going on to undergo tests of efflciency for which badges are awarded. The ifilm was brought to a finale with | scenes of the activities of the Swiss Army on skis. A feature of the I e:nJ ertainment was the magnficent alpine scenery in which 'the shots :were filmed, while the excellent facilities provided for the sport were of especial interest.
