GUIDES AS FORCE FOR PEACE

need for realisation of significance With the resurrection of the guide movement in Europe, every eft'ort should be made to encourage ;the exchange of guiding literature and cement relations so that it wbuld be once again a world-wide movement, with every guide group, whether in Germany or Levin, on an absolutely equal footing. This point was- emphasised by Mr. H. B. Burdekin when stressing uhe international significance oi the girl guide movement at the third annual meeting of the Levin ASsociatioh, held in St. Mary's Hall. Few ciUzens fully realised tne significance of the movement in the present bid for world peace ana international goodwill, said Mr. Burdekin, and he appealed to'all to give the organisaiion the much needed support, not only in the provision of funds for the continuahce of its work, but also in every other way. In his closing ' remarks Mr. Burdekin thanked the guiders, guides and brownies who had paraded to welcome Field-Marshal Montgomery. During the meeting, the district commissioner, Mrs. Kirkcaldie, reported on guiding activiiies in .the district and also gave an account of the commissioners' conference, which had been held at the Hermfiage in May, reading ektracts from a report on a guide international conference and mentioning the work of Miss Burgin in Europe. A report of the Levin company's activities for the year was read by the captain, Mrs. Chainey, and Miss Hills reported on the activities of the St. - Mary's Company. A report, of the Brownie Pack was also read. Successful Shop Day The recent shop day eonducted in Levin had resulted in the return of £44 10s, reported the president, Mrs. L. J. Hunter. -This effort was the result of a visit from the provincial commissioner, Mrs. Turbott, who had requested that a special appeal for funds be made to assist in the purchase of Marton House for the New Zealand headquarters for tlie training of guiders. This property had been obtained but had still to be paid for, and the Levin Association had been asked to find the sum of £95 as its contributionl Commenting on the financial ! position of the association, Mrs. Hunter said that the only dependable source of income was in membership fees, and in this regard it was pleasing to hote that dufing the. past year the membership had been doubled. In spite of this, expenses were outstripping the income. The expenditure for the rent of St. Mary's Hall, which amounted to £12 annually, was a heavy expense considering that the income was £11 10s. The balance sheet also showed that there were many recurring expenses. ' Special thanks were due to manyj friends and well-wishers who had helped during the year, particu-! larly Messrs. D. P. and J. Todd for the use of their offices, with the accompanying lighting and heating, for evening monthly meetings; the W.W.S.A. for its gift of signalling equipment; to the examiners who had carried out the tests for guide and brownie badges; to the Levin Borough Council for permission to use the rest room for the meeting when Mrs. Turbott visited Levin, and for the use of its stall, and for help 'in erecting it on the occasion of the shop day; and to Mr. A. Haley for auditing the accounts. In conclusion she paid a special tribute to the secretary, Miss E. R. Evison, and the committee for their loyal help and co-operation. The following brownies were presented with service stars: — First Year Star: • Shirley Broadbent, Jennifer Hair',> Susan McDonald, Virginia "Hesp -and ,L.. Hudsoit.
