The jurisdiction of Magistrgtes in civil claims is extended from £300 to £500 by a elause in the\ Magistrates ' Courts Bill, a tpchnical measure of 125 clauses, which was introduced in the House o.f Representatives today. The Bill, whieh was read a second time pro forma and referred to the statutes revision eommittee, fixes the salary of Magistrates at £1250 a yqar with prescribed allowances. The Bill states that the number of Magistrates shall not al any time exeeed 35. The retiriug age for Magistrates is fixed at 68 years. Mr. II. G. R. Mason, Minister of Justice, explained that the Bill rewrote the law relating to the constitution and jurisdiction of Magistrate's Courts rather differently from the present ex position • of it in the existing statutes.. It set up courts and did no.t go so mucfi into . the proeejure, leaving that to be settled by rules as in the case *of the Supreme Court. .
