. ; WELLINGTON, July 12. The uunibeiv .b'f wliaies passmg through Cook' Strait on their northward journey this season is rtioiA than can be handled by tlie Tory Channel whaJers. Many of the whales are being permitted to continue their journey unmolested. Over the past f'ew days the chasers have been kept exceptionally busy, and whales have been brought iu at a faster rate than they can be handled at the processing works just inside- Tory Channel. Many alarms from the lookout of whales being sighted in tne straits have to go unheeded. The whalers are now well on the way to bettering the record catch for tne season which was established last year, when 110 whales were captured. The season docs not end until August 31 and the catch to date is 76. Four whales a day are being handled at the factory, and this number is being well maintained by the chasers.
