WATERSIDERS DISLIKE THE POLICE METHODS

CHRISTCHURCH, July 13. Tlie decision made at the monthly stop work' meeting of the Lyttelton branch of the Waterside Workers ' Uilion not to work the sliips in port tomorrow as a protest against inethods alleged to have been used by a detoetive before lie laid a charge of attempted theft against a member of the union, was not altered by the exeeutive of the union wlien it met yesterday. The Minister of Labour, Mr. McLagan, addressed the exeeutive. The circumstances leading up to this action are that some weeks ago a case of garments was found open in the hold of a coastal vessei. A detective is said to have concealed himself in the hold during the iunch hour and watclied the watersiders workihg nntil, on some of the cargo being shii'ted, ho was discovered. It was as a result of wliat ho was alleged to have seen that the charge was laid. The action of the men in deciding not to work on Monday is a protest against'. the reported methods'tif the police on this occasion.
