WATERSIDERS PROTEST AT POLICE ACTION
CHRISTCHURCH* July 10. Because a waterside worker is to appear at tlie Christchurch Magi&trato ;s Court next Monclay on a charge of attempted theft of cargo, the Lyttelton branch of the Waterside Workers' Union, at its monthiy stopworlt meeting today, clecided on a majoritv votc that no work would be done on the vvaterfront on that day. The cirerunstaives leading up to this action are that soiue weeks ago a ca.se of garments was found open in the hoJd of a coasta] vessei. A detective is said to have eo.ncealed himself in the hold during the lunch hour and watched the watersiders working until, on sonie oi the cargo being shifted, he was discovered. It was as a result of what he was alleged to have seen that tne charge was laid. The action of the men in deciding not to work on Mondav is a protest against the reported methods of the police on this occasion. The wave of rioting in Caleutta by Hindus and Moslems entered its thir'd day with four people killed and 20 injured. The tranu-ar and bus services were stopped. Shops and business premises reopened hopefully after two days but hurriedly shut again.
