SOUTHLAND WANTS LOCAL REFEREE.

INVERCARGILL, July 7._ The Southland Rtigby Union is not in favour of appointing an outside referee for the Ranfurly Shield game Otago v. Southland. The subjeet was again diseussed by the management eommittee tonight and it was deeided to adhere to the eustomary praetiee^of making an appointment from names submitted by the Southland Referees' Assoeiation. A letter from the association stated that it was in favour of a Southland referee. ' ' Otago were the prime movers for Ioeal appointments in 1935 and the New Zealand Referees' Association saw no reason why these should be altered," stated the letter. . "This was evident at the meeting of delegates at the' referees' eonf erence in Wellington, as the Otago motion yyas defeated and all New Zealand associations were in agreement that referees for representatlve fixtures should be appointed by the local nnions or appointment boards.
