. ^AUCKLAND, July 7. The shortage of caustic soda has been responsible for bad conditiohs in milking sheds supplying milk for consnmption in Aucldhind. This was revealed in a report refeeived'by the Metropolitan Milk Board from the Department of Agriculture which stated that 33 of a total of 206 registered dairies inspeeted in June had bden classed as "bad". "During tlie past two months it has been practically impossible to obtain caustic soda with the result- that farmers have founj it difficult to keep milking machines properly clean, ' ' stated the report. "Nothing can replaee caustic soda as an efficient cleanser of milking plant and f armers are suggesting that the use of.this commodity should be restrieted to dairy farmers until such. time as it again become plentiful. " The Board 's technical officer, Mr. O. T. Hannigan, stressed the serious plight of pasteurising plants. He said two of the biggest treating houses had sufficient caustic soda to last thein 40 days and the other was using a substitute. The last " supply received had been in blocks which had to be broken up with hammers and cold ehisels.
