BIBLE SOCIETY'S WORK
MEETING OF SHANNON BRANCH When speaking at.the. annual meeting of the Shannon branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society (New Zealand) , '.over which the Rev. J. H. Datson presided, Rev. Robert F. Chisholm, the new* Dominion secretary of the society, spoke of -the great need in all lands for the Scriptures. Doors of opportunity were opening everywhere, and in Europe there was a clamant call to provide God's Word for many who had grown up almost ignorant of the messages of the Bible. In expressrng thanks to the office bearers, collectors and friends for their help in the past,' Mr. Chisholm spoke of the generosity of the people of New Zealand, and how much it was appreciated, but in view of the fact that Europe was without sufficient copies of the Scriptures he asked for still greater support, as at present only the fringe of the need was being touched. Mr. Chisholm, who had been closely in touch with the movement for the formation of the new organisation, the . . United Bible Societies, showed how this did not mean an amalgamation of the already existing societies, but rather a co-ordination of all their efforts for the niore effective use of the resources available. It was also inteftded to encourage the formation and growth of National Bible Societies in all lands, so that 'the peoples of the world might have the guidance and help of God's Word in building up a strong and virile body of Christian witness. The following office bearers were elected: — President: Mrs. E. Collins; vice-president: Mrs. J. A Easton; secretary and treasurer: to be arranged for.
