WHITEBAIT REGULATIONS

~ ^ A copy of the whitebait regulations is to hand for 1947. It is stated that for the purposes of these regulations the waters of any district shall be deemed to include every mouth and oullet of every river or stream therein, and a reference, whether general oi particular, to any rivers or rivei shall be deemed to include: (1) Every rriouth and outlet thereof. (2) The seashore between such months or outlets and (3) the waters of the sea or any harbour lying within a distance of 500 yards from any place where pt, low- water oi ordinary spring tic " the waters of a river or stream i. t the waters of the sea or any ha. ur. It shall be a defenco to a person charaed with an offence

amounting to the use of a net contrary to any other regulations in force made under the said Act if such person proves that he was using the net solely for the purpose of taking whitebait and in compliance with the regulations. The following periods are hereby prescribed as close seasons, during which it shali be unlawful in the respective places referred to for any person to buy, sell, or have in his possession any whitebait: In all waters of' the North Island from December 1 in every year to June 30 in the next following year, both days inclusive. Size of nets: " Hokio Stream, Waitohu Stream and Waimeha Stream, flve feet in width, or one foot six i'nches in height. No person shall fish for or take whitebait, or assist in taking it, by any method involving the use of mechanical power, or any other power except that provided manually by the person fishing. No person shall use a box net, or any other kind of net that is towed by a rope along the stream. No person shall leave a whitebait net where whitebait may enter it unless he himself is in attendance. No person shall use a hurdle, or a jigger or stirrer, or a wall constructed from the bank whereby fish may be diverted into a net.
