HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
FORTIETH ANNUAL MEETING WELL ATTENDED The 40th annual meeting of the Levin Horticultural Society was held ih the Levin Council Chambers, when Miss H. E. Bowen presided over a large attendance of rnembers. Prior to the election of officers, the president intimated that she was not seeking re-election. The Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, spoke of the good work done by Miss Bowen durnig the year. i Annual Report Miss Bowen read the annual report which was (inter alia) as follows: "Despite adverse circumstances mainly the cancellation of the autumn shoW, we are in a fairly sound financial position. The summer shoW in November was an outstanding success, the display most attractive and the attendance very. satisfactory. It was a pity that when all ; the . arrangements had been finalised, • and we were ready for the autumn show, that a storm should do so much damage" to gardens that* the "show had to be abandoned. "In August we had a visit from Mr. Peiley, of New Plymouth, who . gave a demonstration at the school grounds on the making of com- ' post. Mr. McClune very kindly lent the association the assistance of some senior boys. They proved very keen and gdod results should be the olitcome of the instruction. Mr. Peiley also attended the show in November when further information was given.
"Mr. Lannie and Mr. Hopkins arranged to give rnembers a description of the Kew Gardens, illustrated with lantern slides, but unfortunately a fault in the electric circuit prevented this from taking place. » . "The Flora Club exhibits have been a very attractive feature of our recent shows, and we extend sincere thanks to Mr. and Mrs. I. D. Parsons, and all who have assisted them. A silver cup was donated to the society by Mr. and Mrs. W. J. rSummers during the year, as did Mrs. Eggi'nton, and thanks are due to them and to Mrs. Lett for her energy in selling tickets, Mr.
Young for obtaining donations, Mr. Bowker for the use of his lorry, the manager of the Boys' Training Centre, proprietor of the Regent Theatre, donors of prizes, judges and stewards, rnembers- of the committee, the auditor, and the Press. I want to extend my personal thanks 'for any and all help given, and finally I want to thank the secretary, Mrs. K. Z. Lynch, for her co-operation at all times. On the secretary there rests" a very great responsibility, and the pleasing manner in which she carries out her duties is a credit to her and a great asset to the society."
