GAMING COMMISSION HEARS ADDRESSES BY COUNSEL
WELLINGTON, July 1. The hearing of final submissions by counsel before the Royal Commission on Gaming began todav. It is expected they will occupv the next two or three days. When the Cominission rose todav, Mr. C. S. Thomas had covered two-thirds of printed submissions by the N.Z. Trotting Conference whieh lllt 97 foolseap sheets. Mr. Thomas dealt with the control of trotting, totalisator permits, a doubles tote, investment facilities, betting on the tote through an agent, Gaming Act penalties, liceiicing of bookmakers and publication of dividends. Dealing with the case put forward by the churches, the Trotting Conference V first observation was that, except in onror two notable instances, the views expressed by them were so narrow as to be impossible of acceptance. Broadly spealcing the churches had based tlieiT case on ethical grounds but were divided in their opinion. The remainder of the Trotting Con ference statement is not yet released.
