Personal f , Mrs. C. You'ng and her infant daughter have returned home. Messrs. N. Retter and A. Bell spent the weekend at Wanganui, where they attended the reunion of the 22nd N.Z. Battalion. Mr. t. Blaskett, of Palmerston North, who has been the guest of Mr. and Mrs. H. Redshaw, Newtown, returned home yesterday. 'Mrs. R. R. Lind has received word that her mother has had to enter hospital for treatment. The latest report is that she is progressing satisfactorily. River Back to Normal The Manawatu River is now running within its own banks after the recent heavy flooding. The flood waters are recedrng slightly at Buckley, and much of the surface water in the Opiki district is fast disappearing. Demand for Knititn^ Wool The present keen demand for knitting wool was illustrated yesterday morni'ng when one of the local drapers had 361bs. o:n the counter at 10.30 a.m. Long before the wool was offered, there was a queue almost out to the door of the shop. The whole supply was sold within a few minutes. CORSO Appeal Advice has been received from Mr. C. Packer-Doust, Dominion organiser for CORSO, stating that Shannon's collection of clothes in May has been valued at about £350, and expressing the grateful thanks of CORSO, on behalf of the Chinese people, to all those men, women, boys and girls who assisted with the collection. Forthcoming Maori Concert In order to raise funds for the Poutu Pah improvements, a committee is arranging a Maori concert in the Druids' Hall on Friday, July 11. An excellent programme has been arranged and among the visiting artists will be a band of young Maori college girls. A rehearsal was held last Sunday morning, and an excellent rendernig of native songs and dances was arranged. Inter-Club Badminton On Monday evening the local badminton club played inter-club matches with - Koputaroa. . > i The A grade team ■ journeyed to Koputaroa and was successful tn.-. winning its match by 17 games' : to 7. The local B team wast not so successful in its home matcli, being' defeated by Koputaroa by 23 games . to one. Local players are reminded that there will be no play on Thursday evening. : " •'"! Cup.GoIf Matches The first matches in the golf competition for the Goldfinch and Cousins Cup were played over the weekend in bad weather conditions. The results were as follows: — J. Mabey defeated D. Purcell, S. Gledhill defeated V. Pope, E. Homer defeated J. Stern, H. Mabey defeated J. Bell, K. Thomson defeated B. Harris on the 19th green. In the "top dogs" match played at Buckley on Sunday the holders, J. Mabey and W. Stern, finished all square with the challengers, H. Mabey and D. Purcell, after being two down and two to play. The holders retain the title.
