NATIONALIST SUCCESS.
Received Mondav, S.45 p.m. ►SHANGTIAT, June 20. Chinese Government reports from Alukden announeed that the Communist siege of Szepingkai, a strategic railway point south of Changchun, was lifted todav when a Nationalist coluum from the Mukden area, after making a 'six mile spurt in three hours, foqght its way into the city foljowed sqou aftcrwards by a column from Changchun. This, it is claimed, ended oue of the fiercest liattl.es in Alanchuria during the current Communist oflfensive and marked Ihe beginning of a strong Governiiient counter-offe'nsive. The Communists had thrown into the battle more than 140,000 c.ombat troops including Xorth Ivoreans and Japanese prisoners, also light tan'ks '"alid^HIe^largest concentration of field artillery and iighter planes employed so far. Government despatches claimed that tlie Communists lqst at least 50,000 killed and wounded during the 18*day battle. The despatches also claimed that two Nationalist columns stpiking out from Changchun joined forces ipidway on the ChangGhim-Kiiin railway, Ihiis reguining control of the entire 50 mile line.
