CONDUCT OF DETECTIVES

WELLINGTON, June 25. Among petitions presented to the House todav, was one presented by Mr. Austerton on behalf of Mr. B. G. Adams, of Auckland, seekiug an inquiry into the conduct of two deteetives toward his son more than four years ago. Alr. Adams alleged that his * son ThOmai Trevor Adams, a minor aged 141 years, was appreliended by deteetives Mahood and Wade on 14/4/43 at his place of employmont in Karangahape Roacl, Auckland. The petition alleged that the deteetives accused the son of tlieft and insisted that he accompany them to the police station notwithstanding his request that thev take him home to his parents before taking him to the police station. The petition alleged that the boy was questioned by Detective Mahood who, during the period of questioning, punished him and used phvsieal 'violence of sucdi a nature that it had been detrimental to his phvsieal welibeing. Petitioner, in seeking the inquiry into the conduct of Deteetives Mahood and Wade, aslted that if, in the ppinion of the House, their conduct were proved reprehensible, gteps should be takou "to prevent its recurrence to any eitizen in this country and that it it can be shown that my son's state of invalidity is in part or whole due to the cruel phvsieal punishment meted out by Detective Mahood, sueh compensation shall be paid to my son as tiie House mav eonsider fair and equit•able."
