TRAVELLING COMMONWEALTH PROFESSORSHIP HOLDER
DUNEDIN, June 20. The first holder of the Commonwealth travelling professorship endowed by Mr. Arthur Sinis and his family, ot Christchurch, will be Sir Hugh Oairns, of Oxford, according to advice reeeivecl today by Mr. Gordon Bell, president of the Royal Australasian College of -burgeons. Sir Hugh, a South Australian by birth, is Nuffield Professor of Surgery at Oxford University and has achieved eminenee in the field of neurologieal surgery. He gave valuable service m treating brain, spinal and nerve injuries as a brigadier in the recent war. His visit to Australia and New Zealand, Mr. Bell said, would be eagerly awaited by all surgeons in this part oi the world. In his official capacity Sir Hugh will attend the meeting of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Which is to-be held in Dunedin in the last week of January, 1948. "It is highly appropriate, " Mr. _ Bell added, "that .the first Commonwealth professor should open his tour of Australian and New Zealand medical centres in'the Dominion and the liome of the»generous family responsible for the creation oi the professorship."
