ANOTHER FATAL FAILURE TO TURN OFF GAS
AUCKLAND, June 20. Another case in which an elderly person was killed by eoal gas pbisoning as a result of leaving a gas-burning appliance tnrned 011 overnight oecurred in Ponsonby. The victim was Mrs. Eva Garnett, aged 59. 'Mrs. Garnett lived alone 111 a small bach at the rear of a house and when she failed to eoilect her milk her landlady visited her room and detected a strong sniell of gas coming from it. Her door was loclced and a neighbour was summoned to force it. Deceased was lying on the floor in an unconscious eondition and the tap Of the gas ring in the room was turned on. A doctor was called and artifieial respiration was applied, but the woman died before she could .lie removed. She was dressed in night attire and her bed had been slept in. The gas supply in the area is shut oif ffom 7 o'clock in the evening until d o'clock the following morning and the police who investigated the death were vsatisfied that deceased had forgotteii ro .tnrn off the gas on Thursday evening and in consequence had lost her life.
