POTATO GROWING CONTRACT SYSTEM TO CONTINUE

WELLINGTON, June 20. "At the last meeting of the Potato Advisory Committee a recjuest was made that the Government should continue the present c.ontract system for the growing of the main crop of potatoes during the coming 3rear," said the Minister of Marketing (Mr. Cullen) today. "Under the circumstances l have agreed to continne this system for the main crop of potatoes to be planted during this spring and harvested next year and contracts will '■herefore be available to main erop growers through the usual chaimels of members of the Ngw Zealand Grain, Seed and Produce Merchants' Eederation._ The j)roduction and marketing Of pouVtoes for 1948-49 and subsequent seasons will be a subject of discussionsbetween myself and the Potato Advisory Committee." , Mr. Cuilen emiihasised the great iraportance of potatoes as an article of diet throughout. New Zealand and the necessity for a substantial increase in tfte area during the coming season to ensure necessary supplies being avaiP able to meet requirements.
