WELLINGTON, June 20. Replying to the statement of the Minister of Immigration (Hon,. A. McLagan) the Mayor of Wellington (Mr. Will Appieton) Said he was giad of the" Minister's assurance that "in ho circumstances Will the Government he a party to taning over any premises occupied as boarding-houses, hotels or bats to provide accommodation for immigrants." He was less pleased, however, with the ' ' cfualificatihn for immigrants" hecauSe this implied that the Governmeht was not' so decided in its policy of acquisition for other purposes of which there were many examples in Wellington, , not ieast Of them the takihg Over of ' large houses for office purposes, said the Mayor. Had the Government bent Its energies towards converting these houses iiito flatS it might have heen possible to remove Welliiigton citizens from the hardships of rearing families in basement rooms (often One to a f am- . ily) and even garages, tents and caravans.
