HOW HANDCUFFED PRISONER ESCAPED

ADCKLAND, June 19. How he eseaped from the WellingtonAuckland express while handcuffed to another prisoner about. 3.30 o'cloclc on the morning of Mav 30 was told by Ronald James Blair, aged 23, a labourer, in the Police Court today when Blair was charged with escaping from lawful custody. The warder said he and two othei warders were escorting nine prisoners from Wellington on the express. Blair and Geoffrey Corbett, who were handcuffed together, were missed from a secoud class carriage which was in darkness just before the train arrived at J torohanga. In a statement produced by the police Blair said he and Corbett arranged to make -a break from . the ,ti;ain. "After leaviug Te Kuiti we broke a link on the handculfs, " he said. "We left the carriage and I hung on to the step on the outside of the carriage. I didn'i see Corbett after that. L left the train when it stopped at Otorohanga, got a lady's cycle and rode into the country. Later the same day I was re-arrested. " Blair peaded guilty and was cominitted to the Supreme Court for sentence.
