ATTLEE SENDS MESSAGE TO BRITISH HOUSEWIVES

Reeeived Thursday, 9.20 p.m. LONDON, June 19. The latest action on the " housewives ' f rdnt ' ' has been the delivery of "a message from the Prime Minister to the housewives and liomemakers of Britain by Mrs. Attlee -while speaking at a Labour women 's rally in East London This was the -Prime Minister 's message: "We are passing through v eritical period in oiir history whichealls for the best efforts of all of us. I know how fine has been the response of you, the liomemakers of Britain. 1 know that the housewife .today has a difficult task. Owing to concentration on winning the war and to world- widc shortages of food and matcrial, the supply of houses, food, clothing ana houseliold goods are not availabie in sufficient quantities to meet the de mand. The Government by rationing by food subsidies and by price eontroj is preventing excessive prices 'and is seeking to give a fair deal to all. "I think that you understand that world conditions outside the control oi the Government make it impossible yet to do' all we could wish. Meanwhile the Government is doing all it can to make the homes of our country more seeure. Rents— rin particular rents of furnished roonis — are controlled. Children 's allowances are being given to help the family while the children are young. The social insurance scheme that will come into force next year wTill provide ,the family with security in times of sickness and unemploymen: that was never known before. "1 know what loyai support we liad from you in the past and 1 ara eonfident that we can claim it in the future for this Government." The Daiiy Herald says: "This London rally of socialist housewives was the prel'ude to a nationvvide series ot Labour women 's rallies ' ' to get the truth about rationing and shortages into the homes and shopping queues where the Housewives' League and the Tory Party are hoping their misrepresentations will -get them results. "
