WHANGAREI, June 17. i The story of a North Auckland farmer who photographed a naodel Japanese submarine in a cow trough, hoodwinMng bhe authorities into believing that an enemy raider was on the coast and causing the armed services to b.e -brought on the alert throughout New Zealand reveals one of the biggegt hoax;es of the war. It is now disclosed that a farmer of Kaitaia, in November, : 1944, reported sigh-ting a Japanese submarfne and daimed that he took photographs. The authorities were shown the photographs, which they were convinced were of a Japanese vessel. All naval vess.els were warned. The Army stood to and Air Force" bombers made an intensive search. Information now disclosed reveals- that the farmer, later ; questioned by the police, admitted making a wooden model submarine and photographing it in a trough. No prosecution was brought.
