SATISFACTORY YEAR'S WORK
OTAKI H. AND D. SOCIETY The annual meeting of the Otaki H. and- D. Society was held on Thursday night, the president, Mr. E. T. Bartosh, occupying the chair, There was a fair attendance, while apologies were received from some 20 members unable to be present, chiefly owing to sickness. Mr. Bartosh, after welcoming those present, stated that although the financial position of the society was not as good as might have been expected, it? was very satisfactory, there being a credit balance of £25 9s 9d. This result had been achieved despite the fact that two shows had to be abandoned on account of unforeseen circumstances, one owing to a severe gale just before the day of the show which had done -much damage and made a display impossible. Mr. Purvis supported the remarks of Mr. Bartosh. He agreed that the society had been very unfortunate but, nevertheless, was in a healthy position. The postponement of the two shows meant a severe loss to.the society, otherwise the credit balance would have been substantial. Officers Elected The election of officers resulted:' — Patroness: Mrs. C. V. Swabey; president: Mr. E. T. Bartosh; vice-presidents : Mesdames Dr. E. G. Atmore and J. McGilligan, Messrs. A. W. Buxton, B. Brown, H. Cockrell, L. G. Lowry, H. Nicolson, W. H. Reynolds, A. Wilson, H. Witchell, H. B. Edhouse, C. F. Atmore, and General R. Young; committee: Mesdames A. Allan, S. Grant, H. Nicolson, D. G. Sutherland, Hetherington, Synnott, Turner and Bradford, Messrs. A. Wilson, H. Whitcomb, A. W. Buxton, ■H. Taylor, J. Neill, C. F. Atmore, L. Walsh and W. Wilson. Miss Purvis was appointed assistant secretary, and eulogistiq reference made to her good work at recent shows, while tribute lwas also paid to the splendid work of the secretary, Mr. Purvis. Future Shows It was decided that the date of the daffodil show be Friday, September 5, and that for the gladioli and dahlia show Friday, February 20. A suggestion was made . and agreed to that there should be more open classes in the daffodil show, and this is a matter that will have consideration by the. schedule committee. It was agreed. that a rose show was not a pay^ able proposition, and that support accorded in the past did not come up to expectations. Mesdames Sutherland and Walker, the president, secretary 4and Mr. Les. Walsh were appointed to draw up the schedule. It was decided that the acceptance of late entries, be dispensed with in order to allow the staging of exhibits to be more satisfactorily carried out. All entries must be in the day prior to the show. It was resolved that a letter of sympathy be sent to Mr. Neill, who is still in the Palmerston North Hospital as the result of severe burns. It was decided to wish him an early •_ and complete recovery from his ihjuries. .
