OPEN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

J. WINTERBURN WINS TITLE AT OTAKI The weather proved a little disappointing for the first day's play in the Otaki Golf Club's King's Birthday tournament. Cold winds and occasional showers of sleet spoilt many a good card in the qualifying round on Sunday morning. Showers continued throughout the afternoon and the early part of Mohday morning, but improved considerably by the time the finalists were due to start in the afternoon. Some surpnses were recorded. The first was C. Enoka's qualifying round of 77 while being on a 15 handicap, and also W. D'Ath's easy defeat of E. Gray (the favourite) in the semi-final of the championship, while J. Winterbum's round of 71, when defeating W. Clark in the semi-final, was a fine effort. The final was devoid of any thrills, Winterburn gaining an early lead with two stymies on the first two holes and maintaining it.
