BIG TUNNEL UNDER RIVER

Received Fridav, 7 p.m. ' LONDON, June 0. The construetion of a £3,(100,000 tunnel which will link .Tarrow and Wallsend under the river Tyne, was cominenced when the Arinister of Transport, Mr. Barnes, cut the first sod. Three 900-foot tunnels will be built, one each for vchieles, cyclists and pedestrians, with four-mile approa-i'h roads to the main tunnel entrances Tlie vehicular tratnc tunnel will have a 22-foot wide roadway.. Escalators will be provided for cyclists as well as pedestrians. Mr. Barnes said that although from the point of traffic requirements, there were other parts of the country which had greater claims upon the road fund, the .Tarrow tunnel had been authorised because it was a deliberate poliey to assist. in the development of areas and cushion changes which must take place ■ here as tlie result of the changcover from war to peace conditions.
