Monthly Sitting In Levin - » The June sitting of the Magistrate's Court, Levin, was held yesterday*. Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M., dealt with the following cases: — Traffic Offences A fine of 10s, with 10s costs, was imposed on Alian George Beck, of Palmerston North, following • a charge of failfng to display "L" plates on his motor-cycle. . Traffic Inspector M. " Kehoe state'd" that the plate of the front mudguard was obscured by he registration plate. There was no "L" plate on the rear mudguard. Failure to have a warrant of fitness on his vehicle cost Edward, Martin Beere, Waikanae, 10s and costs amounting to 12s. s Inability to produce a warrant of fitness and failure to show a blue light on a vehjcle drawing a trailer were charges preferred against Percy Selwyn Field, of Wanganui. He was fined 10s on the first charge and £2 on the second, with 10s costs in each case. Excessive Speed ■ The defendant had been quite frank and had admitted he had been exeeeding 30 m.p.h. said Inspector Kehoe, when preferring a charge of excessive speed in a restricted area against William Euart Aspin, of Auckland.' The inspector stated that he estimated the speed of defendant's car through Oxford Street at 50 m.p.h., and had chased him in the patrol car, checking his speed at a steady 45 m.p.h. Aspin was fined £3, with costs 10s. Wanderinsr Stock Allowing horses to wander unattended on a road cost Douglas Hammond Murray, Ohau, 15s as the result of a charge uid/ by the county ranger. Costs totalled 10s. Supplied Liquor to Natives Aiding the. supply of liquor to natives in a eontrolled area was the charge preferred against Charlie Iletariki. He was fined £3 and 15s costs, and an order was made for the confiscation of the liquor. Constable A. T. Kelk told the court that at 6.20 p.m. on May 17 he saw defendant standing outside the rear entrance of the Levin , Hotel. He had one bottle of beer in his hip picket and a case containing 12 bottles was found just inside the yard. Defendant had admitted that the liquor had been obtained for him by an unknown pakeha. Unlighted Bicycle He was very reluctant to bring young persons before the court on such a qharge, particularly a young woman, but in this case she had been warned twice and various other members of her family had also been warned, said Inspector Kehoe, when prosecuting Winnifred >• Glover, aged 19, Weraroa. The defendant was charged with riding a bicycle at night, which was not equipped with a light. On each occasion, said Mr. Kehoe, defendant had been accompanied by her mother, who had a light. "The female sex may be more dangerous than the male in these matters," commented Mr. Goulding, when imposing a fine of 10s. He would not in this case inflict a heavy fine as the girl had stated in a letter to the court that she was not workin^: at present. Maintenance Breach Failure to make payments of maintenance after having been ordered to do so at a court sitting in August, when he had been £50 in arrears, was a charge preferred against Maliu Lilo, of Dannevirke. It was stated that £94 was now owing. He was sentenced to three months' imprisononment, the warrant being suspended if weekly payments' of £3 5s were made. Civil Cases " Judgment by default was allowed in the following civil case: T. Pedder v. R. W. McKenzie for the recovery of £108 17s. Arthur Lee was ordered to pay £57 13s 6d to J. S. Spencer at the rate of £2 per month, in default two months' imprisonment, the first payment to be made on June 30. James Walker was ordered to pay Harry Clement Hinsman and Frank Ewington Powell £17 12s at the rate of 10s a week, in default 19 days' imprisonment.
