WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
WAITARERE CELEBRATE FIRST ' BIRTHDAY Fine weather favoured the Waitarere Womeh's * Institute on the occasioh of its first birthday. St. Andrew's Hall was filled, visitors being present from Poroutawhao, Koputaroa, Ihakara, Levin and Kimberley. The meeting opened with the institute song and . the aspirations, Mrs, Fagaij occupied the ' chair and welcomed members and visitors. The " prograpime commeneed with 'a pianaforte solo by Miss Farquses Mrs. , Perigo presehted two fecitatioiis and these were followed by tw6 solos by Miss Aim, and a sketch entitled •: "A Tea Tangle" by Mesdames Stanley ahd Benning. -A feature of the afternoon was a competition by the Waitarere members, "the best hat made from kitehen utensils." Nine members paraded and were ' judged as follows*. Mrs. Hood 1, Miss Smith, Mrs. Benning and Miss Farquse 3 (equal). The best bloom competition resulted: Mrs. Fagan 1 and '2-, Mrs. Hood 3. Mrs. Knight, of Apiti, wo'rv the jUmbled names competition. Dufing the.. afternoon Mrs. Fagan, on behalf of the Waitarere members, . presented 'Mrs. L. Fletcher, the past president, with asmall gift in appreciation of her ' valuable services. The president then • asked the representatives from the different institutes to take part in the cutt'ing of the birthday cake. Mrs. Fleteher lit the 'one candle, Mrs. Fagan extinguished it and Mrs. PoV/ell cut the cake which had been made by ' Mrs. Stanley and iced by Mr. J. Wartnaby. A very enjoyable afternoon was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem.
