BOROUGH ADMINSTRATION

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was neld on .Tuesday evening. The Mayor, Mr. R. E. Downes, presidid and Crs. R..R Lind, J. A. Roach, H. Aitchison, J. Curran and E. .-erry were present. Apologies for absence were receiv.ed from Crs. W. C. 'Higgie and H. L. Norris. The managing-secretary of the Palmerston North Hospital Board forwarded a . copy of the ooard's estimates for , the year. The town clerk pointed8 outo that the hospital levy on the Shannon ' 'Borough would be reduced by £22 5s 4d. The estimates were read and received. /The district .. engineer of the New Zealand Railways communicated, stating that improvements in the railway stock yards at Shannon were being arranged to reduce gmells and accumulation of rubbish. The engineer pointed out that part of the trouble occurrea on the road outside the yards due to the street water table not func.loning and the area between tne paved road and the yards being cut up by stock. It was stated Jhat the concreting of the water table for two chains opposite the southern part. . of the railway yards, and metalling and rolling the area between the concrete water table and the yards, should be sufficient to overcome the present difficulty. The letter concluded that if the council would clean and maintain. the work afterwards, the department would provide it as soon as cement and labour was available. Following a discussion the council decided to refer the matter to the works committee and ask it to report to ohe next meeting. . Cr. R. R. Lind reported that he had inspected a quantity of piping at the Linton Military Camp and found it to be 2-| inch tubular steel used for scaffolding. If ohis was available it would require l/O be galvanised before it could .be used -in cohhection with the waterworks. Cr. Lind stated that if there was nothing . f urther ofiering from the War Assets Realisation Board by the next council meeting, the council would be advised to purchase a quantity of new pipe to carry out urgeni work. , t%t, Cr. J. A. Roach reported on the work being carried out at the domain and stated that work on ohe sumps had been completed and the improvements to the pavilion were still in hand. The recent "daihdge v to one bf ' the windows had been repaired. The cown clerk stated that he had contacted the headmaster of the local school, Mr. Butt, concerning the damage to the window and he had inspected the Idamage and reported that he' was convinced that it was not the work of school children. ; , Cr. Aitchisori' brought the matter of the dangerous condition of a number of street corners to the council, and said that ™ some urgent work would be necessary uo bring them in order. Cr. Aitchison made special reference to the Stout and Clapham Street intersection. It was decided to mstruct the borough foreman to make an inspection and have the matter attended to. The passing of accounts amounting to £98 16s ld terminated the business of the meeting.
