- Horowhenua Council Meets ' The May meeting of the Horowhenua County Council was held at Levin yesterday. There "were present: Mr. G. A. Monk (chairman) , Crs. A. J. Gimblett, A. M. Atkins, D. K. Guy, A. M.- Qolquhoun, J. H. P. Liggins, W, Jenkins, W. Taylor and J. D. Aitchison, and Messrs, F. -H. Hu'dson (clerk) and W. H. Fraser (engineer) . x " Sanitary Inspection Work A letter was received from the. Levin Borough Council stating that it had received requests for a conference of local bodies in the Horowhenua district for the purpose of considering the questiop. of the appointment . of a combined . •building and sanitary inspector fo? the district. * This ' conference, stated the letter, would be held in Levin on a date to be arranged. The* council asked for three representatives to be sent. from che Horowhenua County Council and the names of such representatives. It was pointed out that the conference was purely exploratory, and was being called for the purpose of discussing the matter. "I think this matter should be discussed from a district angle," said the chairman, when discussing the letter. He suggested that Crs. Taylor, Colquhoun and Liggins represent the couneil. This was finally agreed to. Request for Donation A request by the Levin Junior Chamber of Commerce for ,a donation to its road safety campaign was declined, members considering that such matters as road safety were the concern of the Transport Department. It was also pointed out that as the Levin Chamber was piirely a local organisation, and eovered only a small portion of the council'& area, the council was not in the position to give the scheme financial support. Request for Drain A request for the installation of a drain on his property was made by Mr, J. D. Caston, Waitarere. In a Tetter to. the council, Mr. Caston pointed out that the present drain through the front of his property was inadequate, as the outlet was insufftcient. For several months of the year the front of his property Was flooded fco a depth of two feet, and the approach. to his home was consequently impassable. He requested that the council dig a new drain along the west side of the property. The chairman said the request was unusual, as normaliy it was only a matter of giving approval for an owner to dig a drain. He Understood, however, that the circumstances in this case were different, and suggested the matter be referred to the councillors 'fbr 'thb' Whirokino Riding 'for their report. This suggestion was subsequently adopted. Fern Seen As Fire Menace . Stating that the fern on the side of the road was becoming a fire menace, and consequently endangering his garage, Mr. J. H. Staples, Manakau, wrote seeking permission„ to move his boundary fence forwjard to incorporate a portion of this ground so that he could personally control the fern. Commenting, Cr. Atkins said the fern was flve or six feet high. The chairman stated that he could see no objection to this arrangement, but suggested that it be left in the, hands of Cr, Atkins and the engineer, with power to act. Annual Conference In view of the fact that Mr. Monk would shortly be resigning from his position as chairman, it was unanimously decided that Cr.-A. J. Gimblett represent the Horowhenua County at the forthooming annual conference in Christchurch, it was necessary, said M;r. MJonk, to notify the Counties' Association of the change immediately, and as he had not yet resigned the new chairman could not yet be appointed. Leave of absence was granted Mr. F . H. Hudson to attend the county clerks' conference in Christchurch on the same date. Rest Room Project A letter from the Department of Lands and Survey stated that the Plunket Society, Waikanae, was desirous of building a rest room on a portion of the Native township reserve. For the purpose of assisting the society, a request was made that the council should ;ake over the control of the por.ion. of the reserve desired. This was agreed to. Repainting- of Sign A letter was received from the Tokomaru School Committee requesting that the council repaint the school sign on the Tokomaru, Road. " This was referred to _ the engineer for attention, with power to .act.
