MOTHER'S DAY ORIGINATED IN GREECE

The festival of Mother's Day will be observed on Sunday by the wearing of the traditional white carnation, which has for many years been adopted as the floral emblem, worn in honour of all mothers on the second Sunday in May. The festival of Mother's Dav is derived from the custom of mother-worship in ancient Greece. In pre-Christian days, during the Ides of March in Asia Minor, formal mother-worship was practised, with ceremonies to Cybele, or Rhea, the "Great Mother of the Gods." With the coming of Christianity, this developed into worship of the' "Mother Church," with the .celebration occurring on Mid-Lent Sunday. On that day children returned home • with gifts for their parents, particu.arly their mothers. In the United States of America, - Mother's Day was given official recognition by Congress, on Mav 8, 1914. ,
