FIRE BRIGADE CARNIVAL

— 7 — FINAL DAY TODAY Aftet— f our weeks of excellent organising and- hard work' by the three committees, •: the . hre . brig^de carnival draws to a ciose. Today sees the . final aetivities of the committees aaid the ; results will be known this evening, when an announcement will be made at the combined da'iice in the Druids' Hall. ' .Towards the latter stages of the carnival aetivities decreased somewhat, but it is expected that sufficient funds will have been collected to meet the objective — that of providing the town with a new fire engine. The committees must be congratulated on their wonderful .efforts, and which ever queen tops- the poll this evening it will be a popular decision as far. as the public is concerned. The whole carnival has been conducted in a most favourable manner, especially the way in which the three committees cooperated in the arranging of functions. Uniike most small town aetivities, there were no arguments or ill feeling among the respective workers. The public, too, entered into the spifit of the carnival and the support given it is indeed heartening to all concerned. Unfavourable weather co'nditions spoiled what would have otherwise been a very successful day on the domain on. Saturday afternoon, when the Maori committee staged their big attraction, the gala day. . As the procession wafe due to leave the post office, rain commenced to fall and it set in steadily during the afternoon. Those who gathered at the domain did not remain very long. Even so, the gate takings and the result of the stall operations during the short time they were open more than covered any expenses incurred -by the committee. If the first hour oi- so was any indication as to what the day was to bring for'th, a record day would have result, ed. The dance in the evening, y?as also poorly attended, but here again7r~the committee was fortunate in clearing its outlay. ' " y The Maori committee desires to extend thanks to all those who worked so willingfy to arrange the day.
