W E LL LN GTO.N, Alur. IS. Gambiing in a way to rclea.se the peut-up feeliiigs of youth iu today's society, Mr. G. 10. Barker, of the Pedcration of Vouiig People 's Clubs, told the Gainiiig Goiuinission yesterday. "It is the maia objoct of young people to get rich quickly, and to have the good tliiugs of life imiuediately, ' ' he said. The Young People 's Club, he explained to Mr. Justiee Finlay, is a non politioal, non-religious organisatiou •which clainis to represent a fair erosssection of the country's youth. With a menibersliip of about 1000 throughout New Zealand, its aims are to bring young people together, and to edueate them on the inore serious side of life. "We don't condemn oi' condone gambiing. We only want to see it on a basis which will give the public and the sport a fair deal," he said "Young people today are essentially practical. They know that to declare eertain forms of gambiing illegal does not do away with these forms. We must progress with the feelings of the public. Mass gambiing has grown over the past 50 years. • Youth has beei) bombarded with gct-rich-quick propaganda, siiecially in novels where the farm boy niakes his fortune and meu like Carnegie, and so on. "Life itgelf is a gamble. The general idea is that you work and save till you have enough- inoney to invest and make some more. " Mr. Barker did not' tliink off-course betting to the totalisator in various centres would stand the test of prac tice, and it may be more efficient to legalise bookmakers. Speaking of lotteries, he said quite a lot of money went out of the country to Tattersall's. A State lottery would prevont this money going away, and perhaps the prizes could be better. "I tliink it seandalous that youth oi'ganisations sliould be looking iior
clubrooms when so much space about town is taken up by fun parlous, where, as far as I can see, you get nothing baek for your penny," he concluded.
