STRIKING MARCHING DISPLAY
100 GIRLS AT SHANNON One hundred marching girls, comprising the ten teams affiliated to tne ' Horowhenua Marching Association, presented a mosi spectacular display on the Shannon Domain on Saturday afternoon. This was the first occasion that the public of Shannon has had the. opportunity to witness a large scale marching display in ' their home town. ^ Following the march past the teams fell in facing the public. The Mayor (Mr. R. E. Downes) extended a welcome to the visiting teams and thanked the officials of the association and the Horowhenua Pipe Band for presenting the display at Shannon. He stated that it was a pity that there was not a larger crowd ' of townsfolk present. The display was arranged by the association for the joint purpose of allowing the people of Shannon and district to witness a display similar to one recently held in Levin, and at the same time allow the teams to appear before the public prior to facing the judges at the Wellington provincial marching championships, to be held at Levin next Saturday. The teams each gave a demcustration of the New Zealand championship march and at the completion of the programme displays were given by the Caledonian and K.B.H. teams, of Levin, and a combined display by the Premiers and Broadway teams, of Shannon. During the afternoon the Shannon junior team demonstrated the Horo whenua championship march. The teams taking part were Caledonian, K.B.H. and MacDuffs (Levin), Smith's, Manawatu, Rosco and Textiles (Foxton), Premiers, Broadway and the junior team (Shannon). Worthy of mention is the fact that Rosco and Macduffs were making their first appearance before the public, and their excellent exhibition is indeed a credit to their coaches, Messrs. I. H. Nicholson and E. W. Carpenter. All the Horowhenua teams presented excellent displays and those judging the local section of the championships on Saturday will have no easy task, while some of this district's teams will be among the leaders in the open section also. Following the display the teams were entertained at afternoon tea ' in the Parish Hall by the local parents' committee. At a suitable juncture, Mr. T. S. Downes, the Shannon representative on the I Horowhenua Association, took the opportunity of extending thanks to the visiting teams, their coaches and to the band for making the ' function such a success.- On behalf of the parents' committee, Mrs. W. r. Clough thanked everyone for the delightful programme and also expressed thanks to those ladies who had assisted with the catering arrangements. 1 The Horowhenua Marching Association desires to thank the public | for their support and also Messrs. E. Perry, T. Bell and F. Haley for their generous assistance as gatekeepers during the afternoon. Members of the local teams are ' asked to note that the bus carryI ing the teams to compete in the championships on Saturday afternoon will leave Shannon at 12 noon sharp. Souvenir programmes of the Wellington provincial championships, containing photographs of a number of the teams competing, are now on sale at "The Chronicle" office.
