FIVE HOURS DAILY WITH NO POWER
An airmail letter from London, dated Mareh 5, states that electricity is cut off for five hours daily, and only the main roads are lit at nights. The Government is blamed for the trouble because of its neglect to lay in sufficient coal. For the year only 34 cwt. of coal was allowed the private householder. Further cuts were expected in bread, bacon- and cheese, while potatoes were still very scarce, shops allowing only two pounds at a time to private houses. One shilling is charged for two parsnips and ls per swe.de. Rations of milk are insufficient for an ordinary person, while' householders are lucky if they get two eggs each week. .This with the wintry -weather makes matters bad. Another letter says how much parcels from New Zealand are appreciated. It is so cold. that rain is turned into icicles immediately, and branches of big trees simply snap off with the weight. Everything is pretty, just like fairyland, but nevertheless, pitiful. Trains that usually take two hours now take eight to complete.a journey.
