SHIPS OFFICERS TALK ABOUT STRIKE ACTION

AUCKLAND, Marcli 17. Angered by tlie lengthy delays in the release of their new avvards, New Zea» land coastal shipping ofiicers have informed the Minister of Labour, Hon. A. McLagan, that unless they are issued by April 2 they will take action. Althougli they hope strong ineasures will 1 not be necessarv, the merchant otiicera ; are prepa'red to back up their virtual | ultimatum by bringing Ihe coaslal fleet to a standstill after fhat date. Two awards are involved. One covers the masters and oificers employed by tlie Union yteam Ship Compauy and the second eovers other menibers of the New Zealand Merchant Serviee Guild Industrial Union of Workers in the coastal serviee. Negotiations so far have occupied 14 niontlis. Applications were heard bv the Arbitratiori Court in Septcmber and again in February when it was announced that the results would be issued iu a few days. When the grievance of Ihe officers was placed before the Minister of Labour he stated the awards would be released by April 2. The officers have now decided that this must be the deadline.
