RATIONING OF MEAT MUST BE CONTINUED
GISBORNE, Mar. 11. Meat rationing in the Dominion is to be eontinued, stated the Under-Secre-tary for Works (Mr. D. W. Ooleman) opening the Dominion Master Butchers' conference. He saicr'the Minister had authorised this statement of the Government 's intention because of the eontinued need for the higRpst possible exports of meat to Britain to maintari at least the present scale of rationing there. New Zealand 's exports in the cufrent half-year were estimated at 200,000 tons, and ' the annual exports during the past seven years had ranged - above 300,000 tons. Last season, despite widespread drought, exports exeeeded 350,000 tons — equal to the previous record established. It was regretthble that some butchers were not observing price restrictions. They were accepting a subsidy and at the same time charging inCreased prices to the public. The Government was unwilling to suggest more stringent price control measures, involving more work to the butcher, and to. the Government, buk such measures might be unavoidable if the full amount of the subsidy were to be eontinued under present conditions.
