London's Carpet of Snow Wsappearing MA1N RAILWAYS REOPENED

Received Monday, 10.20 a.m. LONDON, March 9. The temperature was 48 degrees to London at noon today, the warmiest since January 18. The midnight temperature was 39 degrees, the highest since January 20. London's thickest carpet of snow, which has been frozen in the streets fbr rnany days, is- now turn■Ing. to slush and d'isappearing. With fair weather predicted, the railways hope to get all their lines working normally by tomorow. The ma-in railways to the north are reopened, but it is impossible to travel far by road north from London. The coal trains are again moving from South Wales, but 50 pits have stopped work and 16 pits are stopped in the East Midlands, while most of the Leicestershire mines are closed. Thousands ot troops are helping to clear the railways. In Yorkshire snowdrifts still isolate four Bedfordshire villages after four days. Rations were taken on sledges to north Lancashire villages and plarres dropped rations to marooned1 aixmen at Foulsham R.A.F. station. When a rapid thaw occurred at Hastings hundreds of birds fell out of the- trees where they had been frozen to death. The birds, reduced to starvation by the snowbound conditions in Yorkshire, are attacking sheep. One farmer found three of his sheep dead with their eyes gouged out and their backs pitted like pin-cushions by sharp beaks. He said erows were proving the worst menace.
