Received Sunday, 7 p.m. CANBERRA, .March 9. For the first time in Commonwealth history, two senior officers of the Taxation Department went to Turkey and Egvpt last year to investigate the business affairs of a suspected tax defaulter. The man was Yves Nahama, a Greek national. As the result the man, who had been in Australia since 1940, paid £33,291 in overdue taxes and penalties and had to leave the Commonwealth. Nahama, who was engaged in association with Australian brokers in exporting wool and hides to Turkey, claimed, tlrat he shquld not pay Commonwealth taxes because he was not legally a resident of Australia. He did not derive his income from sources within Australia and he paid taxes to the Turkish Grovernment. The Taxation Department found discrepancies in tlfe documents he provided supporting tliese claims and sent the men to Turkey to eheck up. The- officers found that the documents were false. He was giveu a clearance to leave Australia after the monev had been paid and has now been j listed as an u ndesirable' immigrant.
