BOROUGH ADMINISTRATION
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING HELD The usual fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borougn Council was held on Tuesday evening. Those present were the Mayor (Mr. R. E. Downes) , Crs. R. R. Lind, J. A. Roach, J. Curran, E. Perry and H. Norris. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. C. G. Wishart, H. Aitchison and W. C. Higgie. A letter was received from the Shannon Plunket Society thanking the council for permission to hold a street stall on Friday, March 21, and advised that following a meeting of the society, it was decided to cancel the stall owing to the present appeal to the public for funds for the Karitane Hospital. The secretary of the local branch of the Returned Services' Association wrote pointing out to the council the presence of noxious weeds in the borough. The Mayor advised that the borough foreman had recently made an inspection, but suggested that a further inspection be carried out. Tt was also decided to write to the R.S.A., asking it to advise where the weeds were growing. In reply to a letter from the council, the War Assets Realisation Board advised that some 800 feet of two inch water pipe was* all that was available at their stores. Cr. Lind stated that at the price quoted the pipe looked as if it would be- most useful to the council. He pointed out that the council would have to f ace . up to its troubles in connection with the water supply very soon, and this was an opportunity to obtain pipe at a reasonable cost. It was agreed that Cr. Lind should inspeet the pipe on his visit to Wellington, and that he be given power to act. Plans in connection with the State house units in Grand Street and the corner of Ballance and Margaret Streets were submitted by the building controller. The plans were approved by the council. The chairman of the works committee (Cr. Lind) stated that he had been unable to carry out an inspection of the drain in Vance Street since the last meeting, but he had discussed the situation with the persons who had made the request and understood the position. He would carry out the Inspection and report back to the council. Cr. Lind also reported that, in company with the borough foreman, he had made an inspection of the State house units at the corner of Ballance and Margaret Streets in regard to water connections. The water main was now partly under the bitumen owing to the road alterations at the corner, but the position had been OvereOme by fiLtfcing a rider pipe to connect three ■of the hous'es. The other connection had been made from- the main in .Margaret Street. Bitumen was also"' on" 'hand for carrying out repairs to Stafford, Stout, Vogel and Sheehan Streets, and the work would be out in hand as soon as possible. ' ' Cr. Roach reported that repairs Lo the fence of the borough cottage in Stout Street would be carried out as soon as material was available. Cr. Norris stated that he had inspected the drain in Vance Street and endorsed Cr. Lind's remarks as to the work required. The passing of accounts to- the amount of £124 2s ld completed the business of the meeting.
