An entire empire could be defe.ated overnight by one lone a.eroplane carrying atom bombs, said U-roup Captam Cbeshire, who observed the atom bombing at Nagasaki, Broadcasting, G-roup Captain Cheshire said: "If man'entrusts the eustody of atonjic power to purely human wisdom, th-en I hold little brief for civiiisation's future." Dr. Bronowski, a scientific memher of the British team which went to Japan to report on the atom bomb eliect, said: "If a similar bomb to those dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima was exploded over the centre of one of our large cities, it would he expected to kill 50,000 persons. ' ' He believed the only defence against atom boinbs would be to evacuate big cities. It would be a considera;ble time before atom bombs were common enough to waste on cities of under 100,000 inhabitants.
