CONFERENCE CALLED ON MASTERTON LICENSING
WELLINGTON, Feb. 24. So that local residents will have the clearest opportnnity of giving effective expression to tlieir views on tlie methods to be adopted for the restorati.on of the liquor trade in their distriet, ■ the Minister of Justice, Hon. H, G. R.' Mason, has convened a meeting with local body represen'tatives at Masterton on Thursday. "The restoration vote in that distriet cannot become eifective without further legislation, " said Mr. Mason in an intervievv today. ''In view of the suggestion that a trust may be desired by the local people, the Government proposes to take a poll or polls for the guidance of Parliament, on the question of whether the ordinary syst'em or a special trust or trusts should be instituted. The area does not app.ear to form one single conve.iient geographical unit and it may therefore appear very likely that the local people would; prefer that the issue be put separately t'or two separate areas. " That question and the question of the boundary between the areas would be the central points for discussion at the meeting, said Mr. Mason.
